Strong start for Tritons at Graceland

MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Iowa Central men's golf team sits second overall after the opening day of the Graceland Spring Invitational.

The two-day event is taking place at Mozingo Lake Golf Course.

The Tritons fired a team-total of 304, just one stroke back of Metroplitan. Waldorf is third followed by William Penn, Graceland and Southwestern.

Austin Erickson had an even-par round of 72, placing him second. Tomas Ribeiro and Justin Schipper are both tied for sixth after firing 77s with Joe Forsting tied for ninth and Kyle Wille tied for 26th.

"It was great to get out and compete again (Friday)," Iowa Central head coach Kris Graewin said. "After not competing since October it was nice to see how the guys reacted to a different golf course and competition. We made too many mistakes off the tee box today and missed too many greens. We lost 10 shots today to penalty strokes.

"For us to accomplish the goals that we have we need to be better and we will get better."

Kelly Boleyn had a first round score of 93, placing her in a tie for fifth.

"Kelly played well for a lot of her round," Graewin said. "She hit some great drives but also had some shots find the water. If she cleans that up tomorrow she'll be right there towards the top. It's exciting to watch all the progress she's made over the last year."

The tournament concludes here on Saturday.
