Tritons gain experience at home invite

The Iowa Central men's golf team won their home spring invitational here Sunday, as Austin Erickson climbed to the top of the leaderboard.

Behind Erickson's pair of 72s, the Tritons finished ahead of Briar Cliff and Iowa Lakes with rounds of 296 and 289 for a 585. Briar Cliff was second followed by Iowa Lakes, Illinois Central, Grinnell, Waldorf, Alexandria Tech, North Iowa Area and Westminster.

Justin Schipper finished in a tie for third for Iowa Central, with Tomas Ribeiro placing fifth, Liam Ross in a tie for sixth and both Matthew Kruger and Sam Evenson in a tie for 11th.

Erickson had three birdies on his second round to go along with 11 pars. Schipper had three birdies, Kruger three birdies and Evenson, Ribeiro and Ruan Jooste two each.

Manning Lane tied for 19th, Jooste tied for 32nd, Simon Mitchell 39th and Jordan England 53rd.

"Always great to win a golf tournament," Iowa Central head coach Kris Graewin said. "Austin played solid all weekend and it was nice for him to capitalize and get a win. We're starting to build towards the regional meet and we've taken some steps forward.

"It was nice to see Tomas play well again Sunday, finding some consistency. Really looking forward to seeing how we stack up with the rest of the region in a couple weeks."

Kelly Boleyn led the Iowa Central women, tying for seventh overall. Halle Rezac tied for 32nd, Ella Dinsdale 50th and Korie Norris 51st.

Boleyn had an eagle on the par-5 15th and seven pars on her second round. Rezac recorded five pars with Dinsdale two.

"Kelly was able to put together another good round Sunday," Graewin said. "She was able to make her first competitive eagle with a nice putt from off the green on 15. She's taking some nice steps in getting ready for the district tournament.

"It was also nice to see the ladies improve off their first round scores."

The Iowa Central men head to Orange City Saturday for the Red Raider Cup followed by the NIACC Invitational in Mason City next Monday. The NJCAA Region XI Tournament takes place April 30-May 1 in Moravia at the Preserve at Lake Rathbun.
