Todd Small was supposed to be preparing for action at the NCAA Div. I Championships this week.

Instead, he was left wondering what might have been.

The NCAA decided to cancel the event in hopes of helping stop spread COVID-19. Small and countless others around the country lost out on their chances at becoming a national champion.

Small, a current Iowa State junior, twice claimed gold while competing for Iowa Central and head coach Luke Moffitt.

He earned a spot in the NCAA field at 133 pounds after going 17-7 on the mats for the Cyclones this past season. 

Small opened up on social media about the decision recently.

"I'll always remember this season," he wrote on Twitter. "I could really see the growth in this team with how close we got this season. It's amazing to know that each person on the team has your back. This team was one of the most exciting teams I've ever been a part of and a huge part of it was because of our awesome fan base.

"Even though it disappoints me, and our whole team, that our season had to end a little early this year, we were very excited and felt that all nine guys were ready to perform at NCAAs. I know this team will come back even stronger next season because we have overcome so much this season. Lastly, I want to thank Cyclone Nation for supporting us and making every dual nothing short of spectacular."
