COUNCIL BLUFFS - Bret Minor, Keaton Geerts, Jose Rodriguez and Jorden Pryor all secured spots in the final round at the NJCAA Wrestling Championships for Iowa Central here Friday.
The Triton quartet went a perfect 4-for-4 in the final four from inside the Mid-America Center and will compete later this evening for national titles. The final round begins at 6:30 p.m.
Minor kicked things off with a 3-1 victory over Iowa Western's Creighton Baughman at 141 pounds, following in the footsteps of his current coach, Luke Moffitt. Back in 2000, Moffitt claimed this division while competing for the Tritons.
Minor is the seventh finalist at 141 pounds for Iowa Central since 2000 with Jason Alfau having secured the most recent title in 2016.
In the championship match, Minor will take on third-ranked Chinzorig Tsermaa of Northwest Kansas Tech.
Geerts, a transfer from the University of Northern Iowa who won two state titles while competing for New Hampton, earned a 10-8 victory over second-ranked Seth Brossard of Rochester to advance at 165 pounds, where he will meet Christian Minto of North Iowa Area.
This will be the second consecutive year that ICCAC wrestlers collide for the 165-pound title, as Isaiah Crosby from Iowa Western downed Minto last year.
Iowa Central has crowned champions in this weight division five times including by Bradley Banks, Brad Lower and Colby Covington. Travis Willers made the finals in 2019.
Rodriguez continued his dominating run through the 174-pound bracket, scoring a major decision over Navarro Nanpuya of North Idaho. The top-seed will meet Mason Christiansen of Western Wyoming for the crown.
In his first three matches at nationals, Rodriguez won by fall. He looks to add to his sixth place finish here back in 2018 and join a list that includes Jahwon Akui as 174-pound champions from Iowa Central.
Pryor earned his third fall of the tournament, pinning Triton's Curtis Ruff in 3:19. He will take on Mitchell Williamson of Iowa Lakes for the title.
Boone McDermott won the heavyweight division last year with Thomas Peterson and Cain Velasquez having also claimed the crown. Pryor is the 13th heavyweight finalist all-time from Iowa Central.
On the consolation side, Aidan Harris finished fourth after winning six consecutive matches. He dropped a 9-3 decision to Western Wyoming's Garrett Ricks in the consolation championship.
Iowa Central is in third place with 123 points with Western Wyoming first at 139 and Clackamas second at 134.5.
