Iowa Central begins Miller era with victory

Jeannette Scholz scored two goals and the Iowa Central women's soccer team posted a 2-0 victory here Monday at Rogers Sports Complex over Hawkeye.

The ICCAC contest was delayed from Saturday due to inclement weather.

Scholz had a goal in both the first and second halves, giving Monica Birkelund more than enough support in net. The freshman from Denmark recorded 12 saves to keep Hawkeye off the scoreboard.

"It was a really good first time out," Iowa Central head coach Rilee Miller said. "Jeannette had a couple nice goals, we did a good job finishing the opportunities that we had and Monica was just incredible keeping them out of the net.

"Overall, we did a lot of good things. However, we've got a busy week coming up and we need to use this as a chance to see what we can improve on and get better at."

Miller was making her debut as head coach after replacing Jared Beauchamp. The Tritons have now won their season opener four consecutive years including this past spring.

"I thought we did a nice job of applying pressure and being patient," Miller said. "There were a few things we could have done better, but that is to be expected with so many new players and out here for the first time in an actual game."

Both goals by Schotz came on similar plays as she was able to break free along the sidelines. She scored three goals with two assists this past spring.

Iowa Central returns to action on Wednesday when they host Scott followed by a Saturday date with Western Wyoming in Waterloo.
