Tritons secure convincing win over Scott

After falling behind 1-0 in the early minutes here Wednesday, the Iowa Central women's soccer team responded in a big way.

The Tritons scored five unanswered goals to post a convincing 5-1 victory at Rogers Sports Complex over Scott, improving to 2-0 on the season.

"We started off slow," Iowa Central head coach Rilee Miller said. "That goal was a much-needed reality check. Once we tied it up, we were able to gain our momentum back and create more opportunities in their defensive third."

Freshman Katie Bennett recorded a hat trick, Maddie Rushton had a goal and two assists, and Jeannette Scholtz had both a goal and an assist.

Bennett had the first goal of the day for the Tritons with Scholz, a returning sophomore, making it 2-1. Bennett's second goal followed with Rushton adding to the lead still in the first half with her first collegiate goal.

"Katie did a great job of attacking and finishing," Miller said. "She put herself in good positions and her teammates found her."

In the second half, Bennett finished off her hat trick with an assist by Rushton.

"I'm always happy to get a win, especially at home," Miller said. "We're confident that we can take what we learned from this game and be ready to go this Saturday."

Iowa Central also posted a 15-0 victory over Scott this past spring.

Monica Birkelund allowed just one goal in net, earning her second win of the season.

The next action for the Tritons will be on Saturday when they face Western Wyoming in Waterloo.
