Tritons score two titles, Top-10 finish at nationals

MESA, Az. - It was a record-breaking season for the Iowa Central women's tennis program.

And that continued here Tuesday during the NJCAA Div. I Championships.

The Tritons finished a program-best 10th overall, crowning two consolation doubles champions along with a fourth place singles finish.

"It was just a total team effort all week long," Iowa Central head coach Jerry Thor said. "The girls came down here with high expectations and goals. We are leaving with medals and the ranking of a Top-10 program, so I know I am very proud of them.

"And I hope they are proud of what they have done for Iowa Central tennis."

Marketa Beladova and Juliana Vidal won the No. 1 doubles consolation bracket, scoring an 8-5 victory over a doubles team from Harford. The duo also posted an 8-5 triumph in the semifinals to reach the consolation final.

At the No. 3 doubles position, twin sisters Emma and Rachel Slade scored an 8-4 victory over a doubles team from Jones College. The pair moved into the final round with an 8-2 semifinal win.

"We knew we needed some big wins to finish in the Top-10 of the team standings," Thor said. "The girls stepped up and played incredible tennis on Tuesday to get the job done."

Sofia Andrade reached the consolation final at the No. 2 singles spot, coming up just short against the No. 5 seed Annunciata DeSouza of North Central Texas, 8-3. The sophomore placed fourth.

Rebecca Van Der Lee also had a strong tournament, reaching the quarterfinals of her singles draw.

Like Andrade, Vidal and the Slade twins are all sophomores while Beladova is a freshman.
