2020-21 Recap: Breakthrough year for Tritons

2020-21 Recap: Breakthrough year for Tritons

The Iowa Central tennis program reached new heights this past spring on the courts.

First, it was the Triton women at the NJCAA Div. I Championships as they placed 10th overall. That marked the highest finish for the team in school history.

Marketa Beladova and Juliana Vidal won the No. 1 doubles consolation bracket and twin sisters Emma Slade and Rachel Slade won the No. 3 doubles draw.

Sofia Andrade finished fourth at No. 2 singles for the Tritons and head coach Jerry Thor.

"It was just a total team effort all week long," Thor said. "The girls came down here with high expectations and goals. We are leaving with medals and the ranking of a Top-10 program, so I know I am very proud of them.

"And I hope they are proud of what they have done for Iowa Central tennis."

The Iowa Central men's team also placed 10th, marking the highest finish for them. Nico Zumba won the consolation No. 4 singles bracket to lead the way.

"As a head coach, I could not be more proud of everyone involved with the Iowa Central tennis program," Thor said. "Despite being deal with plenty of adversity this year, they really came together and helped leave their mark on Triton athletics."
