Tritons shine once again at nationals

PITTSBURG, Kan. - The Iowa Central track and field team once again shined bright on the national scene here at the NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.

The Triton men placed second overall with the women finishing in fifth. South Plains claimed the team title on the men's side with Iowa Western walking away with gold in the women's standings.

Iowa Central claimed five events during the two-day meet from inside the Robert W. Plaster Center along with numerous Top-10 school records and personal bests.

The distance medley relay of Rosalie Fish, Nadesha Wallace, Lilia Alvarez and Chloe Lenoir started things off by capturing the crown in 12:06.58. Victoria Adu added a first place finish in the weight throw with a toss over 19 meters and Hannah Connell captured the 60-meter hurdles in a school-record time of 8.30. 

On the men's side, Jaheem Hayles captured the 60-meter hurdles in 7.80 and Dashinelle Dyer won the 60-meter dash in 6.70. Dyer tied the school-record during the prelims at 6.64, which was set by current Texas Tech standout and former Triton national champion Courtney Lindsey.

Along with top performances by Hayles and Dyer, David Bosquez Grimaldo was the high jump runner-up after clearing 2.15 meters and Nicola Paletti showed his versatility by claiming silver in the hepthatlon. 

Grimaldo's leap ranks fifth-best in program history at 7-0.65. 

Dyer was third in the 60-hurdles in 7.88 and Lee Eppie added bronze in the 400 in 47.09. Eppie set a new school-record with his time, breaking the mark of Karayme Bartley set in 2017. 

Aries Scott (heptathlon), Jarod Henderson (weight throw), Jerome Jesup (200) and Kelvin Bungei (3000) were all fourth place finishers with Tristen Hanna (triple jump), Bungei (mile) and the distance medley relay of Robin Aguilar Gonzalez, Cassius Havis, Darius Brown and Pur Biel placing fifth.

Lenoir completed her indoor nationals trip with two individual third place showings in the 3000 and mile. She finished the 3000 in 10:18.17 and the mile in 5:07.96. 

Connell was also third in the 200 (24.11) with Odell Frye placing fourth in the 60-meter dash (7.45). Madison Johnson was fifth in the high jump and Fish fifth in the mile.

Connell's time places her fourth all-time in Iowa Central program history.
