Strong start for Tritons at regionals

COUNCIL BLUFFS - The decathlon and heptathlon kicked off the Region XI Outdoor Track and Field Championship here on Monday, and Iowa Central put itself out front early with strong showings.

Aries Scott and Nicola Paletti finished first and second for the Tritons in the decathlon, with Joel Muamba finishing fifth. On the women's side, Kiya Wulf was the runner-up. 

Scott racked up 6,087 points behind first places in the shot put (9.47m), high jump (2.00m), 400 (50.20), discus (29.01m) and 1500 (4:59.61). He was also second in the 100 (11.37), long jump (6.80m), 110 hurdles (15.74) and pole vault (3.32m) with a fourth in the javelin.

Paletti finished with 5,505 points finishing first in the pole vault (3.42m) and javelin (38.98m) with seconds in the 1500 (5:11.53) and high jump (1.90m). He was also third in the long jump and 110 hurdles.

Muamba tallied 4,226 points finishing second in the discus (24.32m) and third in the pole vault and javelin.

"The last two days were wonderful," Iowa Central coach Jonathan Alexis said. "We had some areas of improvements, but I loved the overall spirit and fights the multi-athletes exhibited.

"It was a great honor to witness their hard work pay off."

Wulf scored 3,730 points, finishing just behind Southwestern's Fane Sauvakacolo. She was first in the 100 hurdles (15.46) and won the javelin (25.89m) while also placing second in the high jump (1.46m) and shot put (8.35m).

Wulf also added thirds in the 200 and 800.

The rest of the Iowa Central team competes here Saturday and Sunday.
