Track & Field Competes at Husker and Ted Nelson Invitationals

Track and Field Competed in Nebraska and Minnesota February 2-3

The Iowa Central Track and Field squads split between two meets, The Ted Nelson Classic in Mankato, MN and the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational in Lincoln, NE; February 2-3.

"We had an opportunity to take some of our more competitive athletes to the Husker Invite at the University of Nebraska, while the rest of our team took center stage at the Ted Nelson Classic in Mankato, MN," said Dee Brown, director of track and field at Iowa Central. "At the highly competitive Husker Invite we had some athletes really shine and stand-out."

At the Husker Invitational, Youssef Hamad was the top finisher for the Tritons, taking third place in the men's 60-meter dash.

Zion Campbell finished fourth in the men's 200-meter dash, qualifying for nationals with a time of 21.49 seconds. Campbell's performance landed him in the No. 9 spot in the Triton All-Time Top 10 finishes in the event.

Tina Samson took fifth place in the women's long jump, Hamad finished eighth in the men's 200-meter dash and Bongumusa Nkosi finished seventh in the men's 400-meter run, coming in at No. 6 in the All-Time Triton Top-10.

At the Ted Nelson Classic, the Tritons recorded 21 top-10 performances among events.

"Our group in Mankato performed very well," said Brown. "Our throwers are starting to find their groove and consistency. All our athletes in the long jump had personal bests."

Natalie Bogandova Kirilova was the top finisher for the Tritons, coming in second in the women's 1000-meter run with a national qualifying time of 3:10.64. Bogandova Kirilova's time ranks her 14th in the nation.

The women's 4x400 meter relay team of Nicole Schaefer, Landry McCoid, Bogandova Kirilova and Abigail Frey finished in third place.

Frey finished sixth in the women's 60-meter hurdles and Schaefer finished seventh. Joan Jepngetich finished fifth in the women's mile, and Bogadnova Kirlova finished ninth in the women's 400-meter dash, followed by teammate Landry McCoid in 10th. Schaefer finished 10th in the women's 200-meter dash.

For the Triton men, Remington Converse was the top finisher, taking third in the men's 60-meter dash. Teammates Donovan Cephus, Jeremy Brown and Jeancarlo Barquinero finished in fourth, sixth and eighth places in the 60-meters respectively. Brown also finished eighth in the men's triple jump.

Chase Deiter finished fourth in the men's 800-meter run and Caleb Crystal finished eighth in the men's 800.

In the men's long jump, Ronnie Major finished in fifth place, followed by fellow Triton Peyton Sanders in sixth place. Abraham Ochalla finished ninth.

Converse finished eighth in the men's 200-meter dash and Hamza Mohamed took 10th in the men's 3000-meter run. The men's 4x400-meter relay team of Seth Cheney, Andrew Boyum, Mohamed and Alex Aguilar Camarena finished the day in 10th place.
