Track & Field Competes at Region 11 Indoor Championships

Triton women took 2nd place at the njcaa region 11 meet

Iowa Central Track and Field participated in the NJCAA Region 11 Indoor Championships Friday and Saturday, February 16-17 at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake.

The Triton women finished second in the team standings and the men finished third.

"I'm so proud of how our athletes competed this weekend," said Track and Field Head Coach Anne Cleary. "Many of them were in multiple events, competed on short rest and in new events. They all just kept fighting for the team." 

Regional champions for Iowa Central women were the 4x800 meter relay team of Nicole Schaefer, Joan Jepngetich, Landry McCoid and Natalie Bogdanova Kirilova with a time of 11:23.25; women's distance medley relay team of Bogdanova Kirlova, Maurine Limo, Raylene Williams and Jepngetich with a time of 14:11.83 and Tina Samson in the pentathlon.

Campions for the men were Bongumusa Nkosi in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.70 seconds, Housem Hrabi in the mile run, finishing in 4:12.71; Canyon Jones in the pole vault and Cooper Spurgeon in the heptathlon and the distance medley relay team of Jed Elmbarki, Trevon Prince, Seon Booker and Joseph Asahi Wright with a time of 10:34.18.

Zion Campbell was the regional champion in the men's 60-meter dash with a school and meet record setting time of 6.60 seconds. Hrabi's time was also a meet record in the men's mile.

Top-10 finishers for the Triton women were Dayvione Briggs: 60 meter hurdles, third place; 200 meter dash, seventh place; 600 meter run, second place; Abigail Frey: 60 meter hurdles, fifth place; pole vault, second place; 600 meter run, sixth place; Tina Samson: 200 meter dash, ninth place; long jump, second place; pole vault, third place; triple jump, third place; Nicole Schaefer: women's 400 meter dash, eighth place; high jump, sixth place; Ivyne Maiyo: 600 meter run, seventh place; 3000 meter run, fifth place; Natalie Bogdanova Kirilova: 800 meter run, fourth place; 5000 meter run, fifth place; Landry McCoid: triple jump, seventh place; high jump, fifth place; Raylene Williams: 800 meter run, eighth place; 1000 meter run, fifth place; Joan Jepngetich: 1-mile, fourth place; 1000 meter run, fourth place; 5000 meter run, fourth place; Maurine Limo: 1-mile, sixth place; 5000 meter run, sixth place; Rowland Kirton Browne: shot put, fourth place; Sara Diew: shot put, fifth place; weight throw, second place; Aliyah Henry: shot put, seventh place; Zuriya Robinson: weight throw, fourth place.

New national qualifiers for the women included Briggs in the 60-meter hurdles and Diew in the weight throw.

"The women out preformed their projected places in almost every event," said Cleary. "They scored more than 50 points than they were projected to score before the meet started."

Top-10 finishers for the men were Housem Hrabi:1000 meter run, second place; Jed Elmbarki: 1000 meter run, third place; 1-mile, third place; Jadon Boots: 1000 meter run, sixth place; Joseph Asahi Wright: 1000 meter run, seventh place; 1-mile, third place; Seth Cheney: 3000 meter run, second place;  5000 meter run, sixth place; Andrew Boyum: 3000 meter run, seventh place; 5000 meter run, eighth place; Hamza Mohamed: 5000 meter run, sixth place; Ke'Waun Stone: 5000 meter run, ninth place; Emmanuel Kipkogei, 5000 meter run, 10th place; Zion Campbell: 200 meter dash, second place; Youssef Hamed: 200 meter dash, fifth place; Jakub Sobura-Durma, 200 meter dash, ninth place; Bongumusa Nkosi: 400 meter dash, fourth place; Trevon Prince: 600 meter run, second place; Caston Frank: 600 meter run, ninth place; Seon Booker: 800 meter run, fifth place; Chase Dieter: 800 meter run sixth place.


The men's 4x400 meter relay team of Campbell, Nkosi, Booker and Prince finished in second place with a time of 3:21.91. The men's 4x800 team of Dieter, Andrew Boyum, Boots and Caleb Crystal also finished second with a time of 8:08.47.

Recording All-Time Top-10 finishes for the Tritons were Abigail Frey (No. 2) women's pole vault, Tina Samson (No. 4) women's pole vault, Cooper Spurgeon (No. 7) men's pole vault and (No. 8) men's heptathlon, and Canyon Jones (No. 10) men's pole vault.

"The men also out preformed how they were projected to finish," said Cleary. "In many races, at the end of the meet we had men on their second or third race of the weekend running against competitors much fresher than they were. It was impressive how they just kept showing up for the team."
