Tritons' Samson Takes First at Emporia State

The Iowa Central track and field team competed in the Emporia State University Relays in Emporia, Kansas on March 29.

Top finisher for the Triton men was the 4x100 relay team of Youssef Hamed, Waukeem Walters, Miles Reed and Bongumusa Nkosi taking third with a national qualifying time of 40.87 seconds. 

In the men's 3000-meter steeplechase, Jadon Boots finished in fourth place with a time of 9:47.86, qualifying for nationals.

Seth Cheney took fifth in the men's 10,000-meter run in 33:40.70 and Emmanuel Kiopkgei finished 10th with a time of 35.06.6.

Bongumusa Nkosi finished sixth in the men's 100-meter dash with a national qualifying and #10 Triton all-time best time of 10:45, and Jeremy Brown finished 10th in the men's triple jump. Cooper Spurgeon finished eighth in the men's pole vault, recording the #4 Triton all-time best with 4.03 meters.

Tina Samson was the champion in the women's long jump with a national qualifying jump of 6.02 meters. Samson's performance was the #5 all time best for the Tritons.

In the women's 400-meter hurdles, Dayvione Briggs finished third with the #10 all-time Triton best and national qualifying time of 1:04.12. Briggs also qualified for nationals in the women's 100-meter hurdles. Abigail Frey was fourth in 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.68.

The women's 4x100 team took seventh place and Rowland Kiron Browne finished 10th in the women's javelin.

Jed Elmbarki competed at the Washington University Distance Carnival for the Tritons, taking seventh place in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase. Elmbarki qualified for nationals in the event with a time of 9:03.05.

 "We had two great meets for the Tritons," said Head Coach Anne Cleary. "It was awesome weather, and our kids took advantage of it big time. It was nice to have a weekend off between meets to be able to get some quality training in. Over the next few weeks, we'll look to keep improving each week and adding more and more athletes to the national qualifying list."
