Finley becomes all-time kills leader

There is nothing short about Amaya Finleyás path to Iowa Central, but sheáll definitely be leaving her mark.

Finley, a sophomore, came to the Triton volleyball program after a standout career at Weston Ranch High School in Stockton, Calif.

Almost 1,800 miles separates her previous playing home from her current one, and Finley has made the most of the journey.

Friday night inside Hodges Fieldhouse, Finley became the program leader in career kills, recording 33 as No. 14 Iowa Central swept Metropolitan and Grand View JV.

Alicia Moreno set the previous record with 1,015 kills in 2011-12. Finley now has 1,045 with three regular season matches left plus the regional tournament.

Earlier this week, Finley became just the second Triton (29-5 overall) player to surpass the 1,000 mark for career kills. She had 531 last year, which is the fifth-most since 2003 in a single-season.

"Having the kills record is a very nice accomplishment," Finley said. "I was surprised last year when I was on the Iowa Central volleyball list for records."

Finley set a match-high at 30 kills for herself, which is the fourth-most for an Iowa Central player. She is also closing in on Gabby Sullivan's career record for attacks, as she currently has 2,762.

Sullivan recorded 2,794 during her two-year career.

Finley is also 11th on the schoolás list for digs and also ranks twice in the Top-10 for single-season attacks.

"Being the record holder for kills makes me proud of how I have developed as a player," Finley said.

In the four-set win over Metropolitan, Finley had 25 kills and 13 digs, with Kealey Anderson adding 23 kills and 20 digs.

Taylor Bienemann had 20 digs, Alesha Johnson recorded 56 assists and 15 digs, and Hannah Huss chipped in 12 digs. Both Abbie Stewart and Haley Alharithy had six kills.

Anderson had 11 kills, Finley eight and Karolayne Santos five vs. Grand View JV. Bienemann recorded 13 digs, Finley 13, Anderson 10 and Johnson nine.

The Tritons return to action Wednesday when they travel to face Northeast. Both teams are currently 6-1 in the ICCAC and tied with North Iowa Area atop the standings.
