Iowa Central claims another signature win

WATERLOO - A momentarily lapse in concentration did nothing but ignite the fifth-ranked Iowa Central volleyball team here Tuesday night.

After taking the first two sets from No. 16 Hawkeye, the Tritons dropped the third. They quickly rebounded, winning for the seventh consecutive time this season.

Scores were 25-18, 25-9, 22-25 and 25-21.

Kealey Anderson recorded 19 kills with 22 digs, Angel Baylark had 12 kills and two solo blocks, and Katilyn Steffes recorded 11 kills with 12 digs. Haley Alharithy had 10 total blocks with seven kills.

"We started out really sharp in sets one and especially two," Iowa Central head coach Sara Horn said. "I think we got a little too comfortable between sets two and three because we came out really flat. It was great to see us rebound and play with some fire in the fourth as Hawkeye really picked up its defense in the last two sets.

"Our middles were on fire offensively. They really helped us find some big kills at some big moments. Haley did a great job shutting their big middle down."

Alesha Johnson recorded 43 assists and 17 digs with four block assists, two serving aces and three kills.

"It was a rough game," Johnson said. "We had a lot of fire that first and second set, but we pulled through when we needed it. One of the mottos of our team is out of yourself and into the team, and I think that's what happened.

"We're glad we pulled it off because Hawkeye is a very good, dynamic team."

Bailey Dugan added two kills and nine digs, Darlynn Okinaka had five digs and an ace, and Baylyn Johnson picked up 12 digs.

Iowa Central returns home to face Southwestern on Thursday inside Hodges Fieldhouse at 7 p.m.
