Top-10 showdown goes to Iowa Central

Fifth-ranked Iowa Central put No. 8 Hawkeye away in three sets here Sunday afternoon inside Hodges Fieldhouse.

Scores were 25-21, 25-13 and 25-21.

For the Tritons (14-2 overall, 13-2 in ICCAC), the win was their fourth in a row and marked the 11th time they have scored a three-set victory on the season.

Kealey Anderson recorded 12 kills and 13 digs, Molly McCauley added eight kills and Angel Baylark had seven. Both Bailey Dugan and Haley Alharithy registered six kills as Iowa Central continues to play with a short-handed roster.

"It was a good, clean match," Iowa Central head coach Sara Horn said. "With where Hawkeye was in the team standings coming in, this was a big win for us. The girls were really consistent, had a good mind-set and never really got too up or down outside of the start of the third."

Baylyn Johnson had 17 digs, Alesha Johnson 10 digs with 35 assists and Dugan 10 digs. McCauley and Alharithy each recorded three block assists with Baylark and Dugan picking up two each.

The Tritons gained control of the match in the second, scoring 10 consecutive points to turn an 8-6 deficit into a 16-8 advantage.

Hawkeye (11-4, 11-4) did jump out to an 8-1 lead in the third before Iowa Central rallied back, tying it at 10-all during a 8-0 run highlighted by a pair of Anderson kills. They finished the match and ended the three-game win streak of the Redtails with a 7-3 rally.

"We went in knowing Hawkeye was a good passing team," Horn said. "One of our goals was to just stay consistent. As far as the game plan wet, the girls followed it really well."

Anderson moved past Libby Zorn and into seventh on the career kills chart at Iowa Central with 762. She also now has over 2,000 career attacks. Alharithy broke a tie with Kennedi Simon for eighth on the blocks list, as she now has 207.

Iowa Central returns to action on Thursday when they host Marshalltown at 7 p.m.
