No. 2 Triton Women Handle NIACC

Triton Women Wrestlers won first dual of the season over NIACC.

The Iowa Central women's wrestling squad put their second-rated squad on full display for the first time inside Hodges Fieldhouse.

The Tritons pinned eighth-ranked NIACC by a final of 39-13 on Wednesday night.

"It was a nice way to start the season," said ICCC head coach Zak Hensley. "It was good to get in front of the home crowd and get the team excited."

Iowa Central won eight matches and were 4-2 in head-to-head competition with four forfeit victories.

Former Fort Dodge Senior High state champion Alexis Ross competed in her blue singlet for the first time inside Hodges Fieldhouse.

Ross, who is ranked third at 136 pounds, pinned Essie McCleish in 2:48.

"Wrestling in my hometown was nice, as always," Ross said. "The Fort Dodge energy and the people that came to support me are great.

"I love it, and I'm excited to keep that energy going all season."

The four-time Dodger state medalist wrestled in her first matches last weekend after recovering from ACL surgery.

"That didn't go exactly how I wanted, but coming into my first matches off of surgery, it wasn't too bad. I just neede to make small adjustments," Ross said. "The college season has been great.

"It's a little different wrestling freestyle now, but the coaches and people supporting us are great. We're settling into this style and environment."

Hensely is pleased with the progress that Ross is making.

"It's taken Alexis some time to make adjustments to the college level coming off major surgery, but everytime she is in competition, she is developing and staying positive.

"The sky's the limit for Alexis. It was nice to see her get back in the win column and improve on her performance from last weekend. She keeps working hard."

The Tritons recorded three falls on the evening. Fourth-ranked Rodiat Adeduntan (116) pinned Saa Arrojo in 32 seconds, while fifth-ranked Aniyah Dinwiddie (123) earned a fall in 20 seconds.

"Rodiat looked really sharp," Hensely said. "These younger girls are gaining confidence."

Second-ranked Bronwyn Brenneman (130) cruised to a 10-0 major decision over Nyla Rocke.

No. 2 Emma Lewis (101), No. 2 Dianna Pineda (109), No. 2 Hadlie Hood (143), Carly Klein (170) and Isabella Canada (191) all prevailed by forfeit.

The Tritons are back in action on Saturday at the Luther Open in Decorah. Their next dual will be against Iowa Lakes in Estherville on Wednesday.
