COUNCIL BLUFFS — The Iowa Central women's wrestling squad made program history here Saturday by bringing home plenty of hardware.

Briana Araujo-Batista claimed the first national invitational championship for the Tritons, who finished second overall in the team standings to conference rival Indian Hills.

Bronwyn Brenneman and Isabella Canada were silver medalists, while former Fort Dodge Senior High state champion Alexis Ross was one of four wrestlers to place third. Joining her with third-place performances were Kailyn Younger, Kammie Schanz and Rodiat Adeduntan.

Iowa Central's Aniyah Dinwiddie, Dianna Pineda and Emma Lewis all finished fourth.

"It was great to crown our first-ever national champion," ICCC head coach Zak Hensley said. "Bri worked really hard and did everything right. She definitely deserved it.

"Overall, it was a fantastic weekend and our entire team did an amazing job. Everyone contributed and helped us secure our first-ever team trophy. I am so proud of this group."

Ross closed out her freshman year with a pair of wins, besting Eden Smith of Indian Hills, 11-4, and Annabel Garcia from Umpqua, 8-4. She finished 6-1 for the tournament with four consecutive wins.

"I was impressed by Alexis' determination to come back and battle for third," Hensley said. "Her sacrifice was huge for our team."

Araujo-Batista, a returning All-American, allowed just one point to be scored against her during the tournament. She capped off an impressive run at 170 pounds with a 12-0 victory over Destiny Ware from Umpqua in the finals.

Brenneman earned silver at 130 after falling to Ware's teammate, Zainab Ibrahim, while Canada was the 191-pound runner-up following a 7-2 defeat to Taylor Knox of Southwestern Oregon.
