Chesang: Iowa Central 'the best in both sports and academics'

Winrose Chesang came to Iowa Central looking to begin her journey as both a student and an athlete.

Chesang will continue her running and learning at Iowa State University in the fall, bringing with her multiple national titles and the title of 2019-20 Female Triton Athlete of the Year.

"Being named female athlete of the year means I was able to perform well throughout the season in both track and field and cross country," Chesang said. "It was a great opportunity to be offered a full scholarship through Iowa Central, I also chose the school because it turned out to be the best in both sports and academics.

"I miss Iowa Central as a family, having a strong and amazing team with a lot of cooperation, love, care and support from coaches including teachers and other staff working in Iowa who contributed towards my success in both academics and athletics."

During her Iowa Central career, Chesang set the school record in the six kilometers in cross country and won four national titles, including three in track and field and one in the half-marathon.

She earned seven NJCAA All-American honors and was a member of three Triton national team championships.

Chesang graduated from Iowa Central this past December in pre-nursing and is already enrolled at Iowa State. She helped the Cyclones place third at the 2020 Big 12 Indoor Championships and was sixth in the three kilometers.

"I'm thankful for Iowa Central for giving me a chance to show my talent and through that I was able to improve it and prepare well for a higher level at Iowa State University," she said.
