Iowa Central places third at half marathon

HENRICO, Va. - Aspel Kiprob and the Iowa Central men's cross country team finished off the fall distance double-double here Tuesday.

Behind Kiprob's victory, the Tritons claimed the NJCAA Half Marathon Championship with 21 points, one ahead of Northwest Kansas. Trinidad State was third.

Kiprob, a freshman who was second at the NJCAA cross country event this past weekend as Iowa Central won a second consecutive team title, finished in 1:04.3 to break both the meet record and school mark.

"It feels great and I feel lucky to be a national champion," Kiprob said. "The fact that we are team champions too is great. It has been a great year for me and the team."

Kelvin Bungei was fourth and Zander Cobb finished 16th for the three counting scorers for the Tritons. Robin Aguilar Gonzalez was 20th overall and Hunter Klimek finished 25th.

Bungei had a time of 1:04.56, Cobb finished in 1:08.46 and Aguilar Gonzalez in 1:09.55.

Both Kiprob and Bungei were repeating All-Americans for the Tritons after earning honors in cross country.

"Kelvin and Aspel were in the thick of the lead pack the entire race," Iowa Central head coach Dee Brown said. "Zander moved up just enough in the last five miles to take the team lead and hold on to it. Kelvin just missed breaking the NJCAA record.

"Congratulations to Aspel on earning an individual national championship, school record and NJCAA Half Marathon record."

The Iowa Central women finished third overall with 25 points. El Paso was first and Trinidad State second.

Chloe Garcia Grafing led the way for the Tritons, placing fourth overall in 1:25.51.8. Taylor McCreedy was 10th in 1:29.18.1 and Zinash Valen right behind in 11th in 1:29.18.7.

"The ladie started out conservative and pushed the pace the second half to move into a great position and finish third," Brown said. "Chloe earned her second All-American award of the weekend and I am very proud of her hard work this season."

Josie Stackis finished 23rd and Mercy Jepngetich was 24th.

Garcia Grafing added another All-American honor to her freshman campaign. She was sixth at the NJCAA cross country championships over the weekend as Iowa Central placed sixth overall.
