Brown and Bifa Sweep ICCAC Awards
The 2024 Men's & Women's Cross Country All-Conference, All-Region and Special Awards were determined last Friday at the Region 11 Championships in Ottumwa. The top 21 performers across Division I and Division II earned All-Conference honors, with the top 15 in Division I and top 12 in Division II taking home All-Region recognition.
Leading the way in the Division I race was Geofrey Ronoh. The Iowa Western sophomore powered to a Region 11 record time of 23:18.2, 35 seconds faster than the previous best 8k time set at the meet by Iowa Central's Aspel Kiprob in 2021 (23:53.) Ronoh has won every meet this season he has participated in (four meets) this season.
Notably, three others would have beaten the Region 11 record time in this year's race. Iowa Western's Barnabas Ndiwa (23:28.9) and Mohammed Kowa (23:36.8) each ran faster than the previous record -- as did Iowa Central's Mohamed Dahmouch (23:34.8). Those three, along with MackDonald Songok of Iowa Western rounded out the Division I's First Team All-Region performances.
Leading the way for Division I was the Region 11 Champion, Yididiya Bifa of Iowa Central. The freshman won the 2024 Region 11 race with a 5k time of 18:13.0 and was voted as the Division I Athlete of the Year. Bifa ran two other 5k races this fall, with her best time coming at the Chile Pepper XC Festival and a time of 17:09.1.
Iowa Central won back the Region 11 Championship from Iowa Western, the 2023 Champions, with help from fellow First Team All-Conference and First Team All-Region performers Abbi Hutchinson, Imane Jourji and Maud Lambotte. The Tritons took four of the five spots on First Team All-Region.
Dee Brown of Iowa Central won the Division I Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year award for the sixth time since 2017 when the honor began. Brown has been named the ICCAC Women's Coach of the Year 17 times during his 21 year career with the Tritons. The Tritons won the Region 11 crown for the 20th time in the last 21 seasons.
