No. 10 Iowa Central begins October road swing

IOWA FALLS - The first of three consecutive road games awaits No. 10 Iowa Central this Saturday.

The Tritons take on ICCAC rival Ellsworth beginning at 1 p.m.

"It's a big one," Iowa Central head coach Jesse Montalto said. "For Ellsworth, this is their Super Bowl. There is a long history between the two schools and we know they are going to come ready to play.

"We've got to match that energy right from the start and be focused in."

Byron Jarrett, who was named the NJCAA Player of the Week after accounting for five touchdowns and 262 total yards, directs an offense averaging over 470 yards and 43 points per game.

Jarrett ranks among the national leaders in several categories. He has thrown for 1,263 yards and 16 touchdowns with just three interceptions, adding another 198 yards and three scores on the ground.

"He's done a great job leading the offense," Montalto said. "His completion percentage has increased (61 percent) and of those three interceptions, two were on batted balls.

"Our receivers have really improved and we finally got our ground game going (against Air Force Prep)."

In a 42-7 victory last weekend vs. the Huskies, Iowa Central (4-1 overall, 0-1 in league) ran for 196 yards, averaging 6.5 per carry. Daylen Boddie had 77 yards, Jarrett 61 and Levon Bellemy added 54.

Boddie leads the team with 253 yards while Desna Washington has 22 receptions for 430 yards and a nation-leading seven TDs.

The Iowa Central defense has allowed just six passing touchdowns and three rushing scores on the year. Noah Epley has 29 tackles, CJ Christian 24 and Major Williams 23 with the unit collecting 13 sacks and 13 turnovers.

"We expect to score 50 and shut teams out," Montalto said. "That is the kind of attitude we preach. We still have a chance to reach our goals but we have win the week and continue to get better.

Ellsworth (1-3, 0-1) is coming off a narrow 27-24 setback to Northeastern Oklahoma A&M on the road. After falling to College of DuPage, 17-6, the Panthers downed Grand View JV, 35-10, before suffering a 64-6 loss to Iowa Western.

Josh Bauer threw for 217 yards and ran for 94 with two touchdowns against Northeastern Oklahoma A&M. Malcolm Gillie had nine catches for 143 yards and Marice Whitlock ran for a score.

On the season, Sean Stephens has 420 yards passing and three TDs with Bauer adding 332 and one. Whitlock has 112 yards rushing and Gillie 13 catches for 197. Tate Lahr has caught three TD passes and has 156 yards receiving.

The Ellsworth defense has 11 sacks and five turnovers as Michael Newman has a team-leading 16 tackles.

These two teams will meet again on Saturday, November 13 at Dodger Stadium.
