Iowa Central crushes Iowa, 67-7

IOWA CITY - Playing for the second consecutive night, the Iowa Central rugby team showed just how deep their current roster is.

After handling Nebraska on Friday, the Tritons turned around and posted a 67-7 victory over Iowa here on Saturday.

Gus Sokol, Raykyle Taisague, Brendan Muchopa and Zavier Ellis each had two tries, while Ledonn Mathis, Tavius Sykora-Matthess and Dakota Southworth had one each.

"Overall, it was good to go down to Iowa," Iowa Central head coach Brent Nelson said. "They had a women's match, a club match and our A-side and B-side matches. It was a great crowd and a great environment; we were really happy to be part of it.

"But when you play matches like we did in terms of the score on Friday and (Saturday), it isn't always as crisp of rugby as we want as coaches. We've got to get better in that department, especially with what we have coming up."

Iowa Central will face Davenport on Saturday at Crimmins Field.

In the B-side match, the Tritons won, 43-5 as Jonathan Goeppner, William Greenup, Andre Butler, Edmon Rabeh, Michael McDaniel, Dylan Johnson and James Cairns each had a try.

"James is someone who has been battling a hamstring injury, so to see him get out and make a big play, that was exciting," Nelson said.

The Triton B-side will head to Wayne State on Thursday night.
